JFC The Downs 2-15 St. Pauls 2-6
On Friday evening last we played St Paul’s in our first round of the championship in Springfield. St Paul’s who had already defeated Delvin came in search of two points which would guarantee them automatic qualification for a quarter final berth.
The Downs who were playing against a slight breeze, started in lively fashion and took some very well worked points to lead by five points to one after 12 minutes. A defensive mix up allowed St. Paul’s in for the first goal of the game which narrowed the margin to a point.
The Downs responded almost immediately with a goal to restore a four point margin. The concession of a second goal to St Paul’s narrowed the margin to two points. The Downs responded well and added 1-3 to leave the halftime time score line at 2-6 to 2-2 in favour of the Downs.
The Downs had to withstand some strong pressure early in the second half which saw St Paul’s reduce the margin to two points. From this point onwards The Downs dominated most of the proceeding and added nine points to run out convincing winners on a shoreline of 2-15 to 2-6.
