THE DOWNS GAA NOTES Oct 9th 2023
Senior Ladies Final LGFA
History was made in The Downs last week when the ladies senior team qualified for the Village Barn Senior Final for the first time in their history. Having won two Intermediate titles in 2017 and 2021 the ladies now look forward to competing for the senior title to further progress their championship haul. Johnny Murray and his management team of David Kelly, Martin Egerton, Christy Doyle, O’Neill Harte, Emma Murtagh and Trudie Rowan will have everything prepared in order to overcome a well-seasoned Milltown side in the final next Sunday in Cusack Park at 2.30 p.m. (to be confirmed). We wish everyone involved the best of luck!!
Ahead of the final next Sunday some of our members took the time out on Sunday morning to meet and greet our senior team. After training on Sunday morning the senior panel met with and chatted to our younger members and had some refreshments. Thanks to all who came and many thanks to the senior girls for their time. We also had one of our sponsors Home Instead out to visit and we again sincerely thank them for their support.
The Senior B team unfortunately bowed out of the championship at the semi-final stage on Thursday evening last at home under lights against Moate. In a very competitive game Moate emerged as winners despite The Downs being ahead by 2 points at half time. The final score was Moate 2-05 The Downs 1-07. Hard luck to all.
Garrycastle Jim McHugh Tournament
Our U12 boys travelled to Garrycastle early on Sunday morning to contest the final game in this excellent tournament ran by the Garrycastle Club. Our lads gave a wonderful account of themselves against a very strong Athlone side in the penultimate game of the tournament. We are extremely proud of our lads for their never say die attitude and working hard to the bitter end. We would like to thank Garrycastle GAA for inviting us to participate again this year and we look forward to many more years of this tournament. Well done to all involved.
