THE DOWNS GAA NOTES Dec 18th 2023

Division 3 Minor Final

Our minor team unfortunately came out the wrong side of the Division 3 final last Sunday afternoon in Lakepoint Park. After a positive start it was Tyrellspass that kicked on with a hat-trick of goals, one just before half-time and two more in the second half putting the tie to bed. Our girls did themselves proud following a great campaign just running out of steam at the final hurdle. Many thanks to the management team of Kevin Staunton, Paddy Monaghan, Christy Doyle Olivia Corcoran and Emma Murtagh for all their effort and commitment to the minors throughout the year.

AIB Junior All-Ireland Club Hurling Semi-Final Hosted in The Downs

We were delighted to host the AIB GAA Hurling All Ireland Club Championship semi-final last Sunday afternoon in Kevin Molloy Park. Tullogher Rosbercon (Kilkenny) took on Casteblaney Hurling club (Monaghan) in the All – Ireland semi-final with Tullogher Rosbercon running out winners after a strong second half performance from the Kilkenny side. Here at The Downs we would like to thank the many volunteers for their time and hard work and making the event so seamless as usual. Particularly we would like to thank stewards on the day Joe Lynam, Christy Dalton, Seamus Conroy, Ed Quinlan, Dermot Egerton, Sean Carroll, Kieran Carroll, Alan Mooney, Deirdre McGuire, Carmel McGuire and Ann, Laurie and Marie in the Cuppa Hut.

A minute’s silence was impeccably observed in memory of The Downs former player Jim Moore prior to the game.

Winter Programme for Nursery Kids

Our Winter Nursery programme finished up for 2023 last Saturday with a very special visit from the big man himself Santa Clause. The children were put through their paces firstly until they were pleasantly interrupted by Santa himself delivering gifts to all those in attendance. The Downs GAA & LGFA clubs are running the Winter Nursery for all kids in the area and has been a huge success. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaches for their time and expertise over the last number of weeks and look forward to its resumption in the new year. Venue may change in 2024 so keep an eye on our social media platforms for updates. Dates after Christmas to be confirmed.
