THE DOWNS GAA NOTES May 20th 2024
Round 8 ACFL Results
The Division 4 side took on Athlone away from home on Tuesday evening in round 8 of the league coming out with a win on a final score of The Downs 0-11 Athlone 1-03.
The Division 1 game originally scheduled for Friday evening took place in a sunny Springfield on Sunday morning. 3 points down at half time, the lads dug deep to take all 3 points against a solid Mullingar Shamrocks team. Goals coming from Ben Harte, Philip Martin and Kevin O’Sullivan earning the win for The Downs on a final score-line of 3-11 to 1-13.
The Division 5 game played against Milltown on Friday evening at home also ended in a win on a final score of The Downs 0-14 Milltown 0-07.
Underage Results
Both U14 squads played simultaneously at home on Wednesday evening. Division 1 completed their league ending on a win against Lilliput Gaels overcoming their opponents pulling away in the final minutes of the game. The amber team played at the same time on opposite pitches ground out a tough earned draw against a strong and physical Tyrellspass side. The Division 4 team still have 4 fixtures remaining with the possibility of a league final still intact. Best wishes to Ben Loughlin on a speedy recovery having received a nasty facial injury.
The U16’s played Kinnegad away on Monday evening last in the final round of the league. The lads battled hard but lost out to a stronger Kinnegad side on the night.
LGFA Results
The senior ladies Division 2 team who battled hard V Corlastown Kinnegad on Sunday morning to come away with a 4-point win. Final score The Downs 4-13 Coralstown Kinnegad 3-12.
Both U14 teams were in action also this week. The Division 1 side were up against Goldsmith Girls on Thursday evening at home. The girls turned in a committed performance to emerge as victors on this occasion on a score-line of 6-11 to 5-06. The Division 4 side also put in a terrific performance against Kilbeggan on Saturday afternoon. A draw at half-time, it was The Downs who kicked on to take the win in emphatic fashion. Well done to all involved.
Fleadh Success
Congratulations to the U18 figure dancers representing The Downs who became County Fleadh champions recently.
Sympathy
The Downs GAA sends their sincere sympathy to Laurie D’arcy on the death of her son Christopher Brown, late of Coventry, England.

Commiserations
Commiserations to Westmeath U 20s who were defeated by in the All Ireland B Championship. We were well represented by Senan O’Driscoll and Barry Conroy (coaching team) on the day.
Commiserations also to Lucy and Dermot Power on Westmeath’s loss to Wexford in the Leinster Final last Sunday.

Na Dúnta G4M&O are back in action every Wednesday night. Anyone from the area looking for a bit of fun as well as a bit of exercise are all welcome. This programme has been a huge success for the club. Please contact Martha on 0871427400 for any further inquiries.
