THE DOWNS GAA NOTES July 8th 2024
LGFA Division 2 Champions
Our magnificent ladies’ senior team secured Division 1 status for 2025 with a convincing performance against a gallant St. Joseph’s side last Sunday in TEG Cusack Park. A positive start meant that The Downs were well on top in the first half with the first moiety finishing on a score-line of 2-05 to 0-3 points. Goals coming from the boots of Beth McGuire and Michelle Bohan. St. Josephs staged a second half surge early in the half scoring a goal and 4 points to make the final quarter fiercely competitive. The Downs upped their performance once again with Beth McGuire completing a hat-trick of goals to end the game as a contest and becoming Division 2 champions for 2024. Final score 4-11 to 1-08. Congratulations to the management team of Martin Murtagh, Martin Egerton, Trevor Fitzpatrick, Christy Doyle, Emma Murtagh and Trudie Rowan along with the players on a solid performance which bodes well for the championship in the coming weeks.
LGFA Underage Results
Our U12 girls travelled to Rosemount on Tuesday evening last to play Cill Óige. Fielding two teams, we are delighted with the progress these ladies are making each week. Well done to all.
Our U16 girls will contest the Division 3 League final next Sunday at 6.30 against St. Josephs with venue to be confirmed. All support would be greatly appreciated.
Sympathy
John O’Mahony RIP
It was with great sadness that we learned this week of the sad passing of John O’Mahony. We in The Downs GAA Club have fond memories of the late John O’Mahony whom we first came into contact with in 2013 when he kindly agreed to take a number of coaching sessions with our senior team. Since then John remained in contact with us and in 2019 he joined our senior management team and again in 2020 and 2021. His knowledge and coaching skills were instrumental in developing our senior squad who went on to win the senior championship in 2022. A quiet and unassuming individual who had a steely determination and a never say die attitude which was never more evident than when in 2021 when he was diagnosed with his illness and underwent a rigorous treatment programme. Little did we expect to see John back in The Downs that year. However, we were astounded, when, as soon as his treatment was completed he was back on the training field, determined to see out his commitment. When his term ended with us at the end of 2021 he always kept in contact with us and was hot on the phone with his congratulations when we annexed the Flanagan Cup in 2022. It’s a well-worn cliché but the term ‘a Gentleman’ truly describes John O Mahony, both in life and in sport. To his wife Geraldine his family Grainne, Niamh, Rhona, Deirdre, Cliiodhna, extended family and a wide circle of friends, we extend heartfelt sympathy. May his gentle soul rest in Peace
