Round 1 Adult Championship Results

The senior men’s side opened their championship campaign with an impressive win against Moate last Saturday evening in TEG Cusack Park. With only the finest of margins between the two sides at half-time, The Downs kicked on in the second half with a palmed goal from Ian Martin and some very well worked team scores. Final score Moate 2-06 The Downs 1-18. Next up for Johnny Murray’s side is St. Malachy’s next Sunday evening.

The junior side continued a winning weekend against Athlone at home in Breedon Group Molloy Park on Sunday morning. In a very evenly contested first half with some quality football played by both team, a goal from the boot of Dylan Carroll in the 15th minute helped our lads take a lead of 1-4 to 0-6 into the halftime break. The Downs started the stronger of the two teams in the second half and dominated the third quarter out scoring Athlone 2-4 to 0-3 with the goals coming from Dylan Carroll & Taylor Daly. Our lads had to withstand a period of pressure in the fourth quarter of the game from Athlone who scored a goal of their own to put the pressure on, but our lads holding firm with some excellent defensive work running out winners on a scoreline of 3-9 to 1-11.

Senior Ladies Results

The Senior B panel opened their championship on Thursday evening at home in Breedon Group Molloy Park with a fine performance against Moate Ladies. Although there were only 2 points between the sides at half time, our ladies motored on completely dominating the second half. A great result for this hard-working panel of ladies.

Under 20 Result

The U20’s came out the wrong side of their Division 1 first round tie away to Tyrellspass last Tuesday evening away from home. Final score: 4-15 to 4-07 in favour of Tyrellspass The next round of the championship is this coming Tuesday again away from home versus Tubberclare. Best of luck to Barry Conroy and his management team.

LGFA Underage Results

Our U12 girls were in action on Tuesday evening at home against Athlone. Two very competitive games between the two clubs with some excellent performances on both sides.

Our U14’s continued their Division 2 championship campaign with a win against Killucan on Thursday evening last. Our Division 5 side then travelled to Tang GAA on Saturday afternoon and despite a very good performance our girls were just about pipped at the post by Goldsmith’s Girls by one point. Final score The Downs: Goldsmith Girls:

Sympathy

It’s with great sadness we learned of the sudden passing of Martin Merchant last week.
Martin was a valued member of the team that won the Comórtas Na mBunscol final of 1970 for only the second time. In those days there was just one division in the competition. Our team consisted of The Downs, Curraghmore and Coralstown schools. Martin lined out at midfield and throughout the campaign gave some five star performances. He was a stylish player with great fielding ability and was a joy to watch.
After leaving school Martin emigrated to the UK where he worked for many years, thus cutting short his footballing career, which was a great pity! To his wife Martina and son Keith sisters and brother and extended family we offer our sincere sympathy. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
