JFC Quarter-Final Results

Congratulations to our Junior team on a superb performance in the Junior championship quarter final against Ballynacargy on Sunday afternoon last, hosted by Milltownpass GAA. The lads put in a composed performance against a strong Ballynaccargy side. The half-time score read The Downs 1-09  Ballynacargy 0-06. The second half was more of the same with The Downs showing their strength to engineer a win and qualify for the semi-finals in the coming weeks. Final score The Downs 1-16 Ballynacrgy 0-14. Congratulations to all involved.

Speedy Recovery

Wishing Alan Ross Club President of Ballynacargy, a full and speedy recovery. Alan took unwell during the first half of today’s Junior game. Thankfully, medical personnel from both clubs were on hand immediately. The quick response and care provided were hugely important. We hope to see Alan back at the football very soon.

U20 Men

The boys U20’s have this week qualified for the Division 1 semi-final for the first time since 2019. They defeated St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge on a score-line of The Downs 7-09 to St. Mary’s 1-10

Senior Ladies Reach Championship Semi-Final

Congratulations to our Senior Ladies who secured their place in the Village Barn Championship Semi-Final following a hard-fought victory over Mullingar Shamrocks in Kinnegad on Thursday evening last. The Downs made a strong start and dominated much of the opening half, building a healthy lead by the interval. The Black and Ambers went in at half-time leading 3-1 to 0-3. However, a number of injuries in the first half disrupted the Na Dúnta side, and Mullingar Shamrocks took full advantage after the break. The Greens gradually reduced the deficit before a crucial goal brought them to within two points of The Downs with just minutes remaining. Shamrocks continued to press and reduced the gap to a single point, but the Na Dúnta players showed great determination and composure to hold out for the final whistle and secure a memorable victory. Final Score: The Downs 3-5, Mullingar Shamrocks 1-10. Congratulations also to Lauren English, who made her Senior Championship debut on the night. The ladies now turn their attention to the Championship Semi-Final, where they face Miltown next Saturday, September 19th, at 4pm in St Loman’s.

Junior B Semi-Final

The ladies’ Junior B panel will also contest the county semi-final next weekend. Their game is fixed for Bunbrosna at 5 p.m. on Sunday evening September 20th. All support appreciated.

Under 14 LGFA

The Downs hosted  Cill Oige in the u14  Division 5 Championship semi-final under lights on Thursday evening last in Molloy Park.

The teams met twice earlier this season in the league and championship, and both games were closely fought encounters. This knock-out clash proved to be another very tough and evenly matched battle. This is a young Downs side with most players in their first year at this age grade, and numerous talented under 12 players helped to bolster the squad all year. It was nip and tuck from the start and great credit to both teams for the quality of football on display. At half time, the sides were level on a scoreline of 2-3 apiece. The second half was finely balanced. The visitors took the lead midway through the half.  The girls in black and amber stripes showed great character and determination to battle back, hitting 2 crucial goals in the latter stages to secure victory. Final Score: The Downs 4-7 v Cill Óige 3-7. Well done to all our young players and management on earning their place in the final. They will now face Clann Gaels in the final - Date - 19th September at 12 noon in Sèan Doolin Park Milltown GAA  Rathconrath

U8/U10 Boys

Our U8/U10 boys were in action this week in Mullingar Shamrock’s Springfield on Saturday morning. They gave a great account of themselves as usual with The Downs fielding two teams against the hosts Mullingar Shamrocks and St. Paul’s /Delvin . The boys put in a great performance show casing their progress all year. Well done to all involved.
