THE DOWNS GAA NOTES July 10th 2023

Round 2 SFC/JFC Results

Last Friday the Junior 1 team turned in an impressive performance against Killucan at home. The lads were on the front foot from the get go and were full value for their halftime lead of 3-08 to 02. They continued in the same vein in the second half claiming all the points on offer. Final score 4-13 to 1-07. Well done to all involved.

On Sunday evening the Senior men also faced Killucan in TEG Cusack Park. A hard working Killucan had The Downs under pressure in the first half and saw them behind by two points at half time on a score-line of Killucan 0-5 The Downs 0-3. Although The Downs improved their performance in the second half Killucan managed to go 3 points ahead nearing the end of the second half. A fortuitous goal in the dying minutes then saw Killucan trail by a point only to engineer a free with the last kick of the ball to earn themselves a draw. Final score 1-08 to 0-11.

Underage Championship Results

A winning start to the championship for U17 Boys who had a good opening away performance and win against Garrycastle GAA on Monday evening last. As with both league encounters this season, unsurprisingly this game was fantastically competitive throughout. Against the wind in the first half The Downs led by the minimum at the break. Both teams were then level as the game entered the final ten minutes. In the closing minutes our boys managed to create and convert crucial goal chances which finally ended the fierce Garrycastle challenge. Well done to all.

The downs u15 played host to Moate in the opening round of the u15 championship and while both teams were short a number of players a very competitive game was played. The downs with some great defending held Moate to a point in the first half going in at the break 4 points to 1 up. A very hard fought second half with both sides missing a few chances resulting in Moate scoring 2 goals with the game ending in a draw. Full credit to the lads for a great effort.

Both our U13 squads recorded impressive wins this week with the Division 1 team overcoming Garrycastle with a strong performance at home on Friday evening. The Division 4 team took on Caulry at home on Saturday with a similar performance as their Division 1 counterparts coming out on top of a galant Caulry side. Well done to all involved and to all the parents of both squads for your continued support.

Finally, the U11 squad were in action at home on Saturday morning against Mullingar Shamrocks and Ballycomoyle. The Downs fielded 3 teams putting in a huge effort and were a great match for our opposition. Special mention to our 5 U15 lads who reffed the games: Fionn Kelly, Billy Carroll, Billy Dunne, Lee Colgan and Josh Murtagh. Welll done to all.

LGFA

The Downs are Division 4 League champions following an impressive performance against St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge in Rochfortbridge on Friday evening. The Downs got off to a winning start early in first half with goals from Beth McGuire and Isobel Walsh. Together with some superb points the ladies went in to the half time break 2-06 to 0-4. St. Mary’s came out fighting in the second half however The Downs maintained their lead throughout defending heroically and were crowned Division 4 champions on the sounding of the final whistle. Congratulations to all players and management team of Johnny Murray, David Kelly, Martin Egerton, Christy Doyle and Trudie Rowan.
