THE DOWNS GAA NOTES Aug 7th 2023

Round 4 SFC/JFC/U19 Results

The U19 team lead by Barry Conroy put in a competitive performance against Coralstown-Kinnegad on Thursday evening last at home. The lads fought hard to keep themselves in the game right up to the final whistle giving a good account of themselves despite losing out on the score-board. Hard luck lads.

On Friday night the Junior 1 team faced Garrycastle at home. The lads were always in control of this game with a comprehensive win in Round 4 of the championship. Well done to all involved.

The Senior men took on Tyrellspass in Round 4 of the championship. With a lot at stake on this result, it was always going to be a tough encounter for the senior men. A last minute goal was ultimately the difference once the referee’s whistle sounded. Final score: The Downs 0-14 Tyrellspass 1-12.

Underage Results

The U17’s returned to winning ways with a good home win over Lilliput Gaels on Monday evening in the third round of the championship. Playing with the aid of a stiff wind in the first half the boys built up a commanding lead. The second half was a much closer affair with the boys maintaining the gap, whilst being pushed all the way to the final whistle by a competitive Lilliput Gaels team.

Following a tough battle against our neighbours St. Lomans, the U15’s were unfortunately over turned by strong opposition on Wednesday evening at home in the second round of the championship. Final score 2-13 to 1-12. Hard luck lads

The two U13 teams were in action this week in Round 2 of the championship. The Division 4 team were unlucky not to come away with a win against a tough Multy side away on Friday evening with only 2 points separating the teams at the final whistle.

While The Division 1 team faced a tenacious Lilliput Gaels team on Saturday afternoon coming away with a win following an evenly balanced game. Well done to both squads.

LGFA

The U16 girls faced a tough battle against a strong Cill Oige team in Round 2 of the championship on Tuesday evening last at home. Despite being ahead at half-time, the opposition side took control in the second half running out winners on a score-line of The Downs 4-08 Cill Óige 5-12. Hard luck girls and management.

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann

It is again with great pride that we wish the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann committee every best wish as they embark on their second year of hosting the national event. We as a club are immensely proud to have many of our club members (none more so than Joe Connaire -Chairman Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann) and our IT officer Anne-marie Corroon who is also heavily involved in leading the event. We have no doubt that this year’s festivities might even surpass last year’s hugely successful festival of music if that’s possible. We also take this opportunity to wish all our club members participating in events every best wish and hope they bring home the glory. Go n-éirí an bóthair libh go léir.
