THE DOWNS GAA NOTES Aug 14th 2023

LGFA

The Senior Ladies contested the second round of the Village Barn Senior Ladies championship on Thursday evening last at home under lights against Mullingar Shamrocks. After an evenly contested first half, there wasn’t much between the two sides (1-05 to 0-4 in favour of The Downs). It wasn’t until the final quarter when the home team scored their second goal (Kristabella Tamosiunaite) that daylight broke between the sides with The Downs finishing the stronger of the two teams. A well-earned victory for Johnny Murray and his management team. Final score: The Downs 2-11 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-8. Two wins from two is a great start for the ladies who now take on Killucan in the third round next Wednesday at home. Well done to all involved.

The minor ladies were in action on Tuesday evening last when they took on a strong Tyrellspass side at home. 6 points behind at half time, the girls showed great character to come back for the victory. In a 16 goal thriller, The Downs emerged victorious with only 2 points to spare at the end. Final score: The Downs 8- 08 to Killucan 8-06. Next up for these girls is next Tuesday is Cill Óige away.

Our U14 girls continued their good run in the Division 4 championship. Playing into a stiff breeze in the first half, the girls found themselves seven points short at half time. However, the girls dug deep in the second half to overcome the seven-point deficit and pushed on to become eventual winners with 5 points to spare at the end. A great performance from all involved.

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann

What a week it has been in Mullingar with the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann again proving an extraordinary success for the committee and all involved. We would like to congratulate everyone involved and as a club we are immensely proud to have many of our club members (none more so than Joe Connaire -Chairman Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann) and our IT officer Anne-marie Corroon who is also heavily involved every bit of credit for their inordinate hard work not only this week but over the last number of years in their plight to get the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to Mullingar for two consecutive years. To say that this year’s festivities might have even surpassed last year’s hugely successful festival of culture music is not an understatement as the huge crowds that flocked to the town were in their thousands every day. We also take this opportunity to say well done to all our club members who volunteered to help make the week such a roaring success.

We also convey huge congratulations to the Na Dúnta Set Dancing team comprised of Aaron Connaire, Billy Carroll, Conor Cleary, Ellen Connaire, Orla Rijksen, Leah Barden and Bailey Shiels, led by Alice and Brenda Deihy on representing the club so well in the 12 -15 set dancing category on Friday in Loreto College Mullingar. The dancers following a superb performance came third – an outstanding result for all involved. We also say well done to Alanna Corroon who participated in the storytelling competition. Alanna as always did herself and her club proud. Congratulations to the winners of each category.
