Boys Under 14

The U14 squad were very busy this week. Starting off on Wednesday evening, the Division 4 team contested the quarter final against Cill Óige in Castledaly. Cill Óige were tough opponents for the Division 4 side and despite a battling performance, the boys were out muscled on this occasion. Congratulations to Cill Óige and we wish them well in the semi-final. The Division 1 team were at home to Athlone in the final round of the preliminary stages. The lads put in a terrific fighting performance coming out with the victory. This means that they now face St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge in the Division 1 semi-final on Wednesday Sep 24th at home.

U14 Fundraiser
Finally, on Friday evening, the entire squad came together to complete the annual Marathon Challenge to raise funds for the team. Yet again it was proof of what a great club / community we have here in the Downs. A showery evening did not deter the crowds nor the atmosphere. Some serious running resulted in the boys completing the marathon in 3hrs 18mins Well done to all who took part – runners and walkers. Thank you to all the parents for getting the lads there, getting involved, supporting the sponsorship cards and for the sandwiches, buns etc. A special shout out to our organising committee ably led by Aine Quinlan and the hard working committee of Caroline, Niamh, Aisling and Mel. Our tae agus caife ladies Mel & Caitriona, U14 girls Aoife & Caoimhe in the siopa, our coaches and lads for set up and clean up. Many thanks to some of our senior players also for joining us but most importantly the U14 boys themselves. Exemplary behaviour, super athletes and even having the craic with a marathon display of headers and volleys. A hugely successful event. Well done to all involved.
U12 Garrycastle Tournament

The u12’s qualified for the Div 2 semi-final in the Garrycastle tournament on Saturday evening with a fantastic win against Caulry. These lads have put in some terrific fighting performances this year and are justly getting their rewards. Well done to all involved.

LGFA Results

The Downs Ladies are riding high after a dominant quarter-final performance against St Joseph’s, securing a 3-09 to 0-06 victory with grit, precision, and relentless teamwork. From the first throw-in, the squad showed unwavering commitment, with a rock-solid defence that gave their opponents no breathing room and a forward line that converted chances. Now, all eyes turn to Sunday’s semi-final against Milltown—a team known for their physicality and sharp attacking play. It promises to be a thrilling contest, with both sides hungry for a place in the final. The Downs will look to build on their momentum, leaning on their depth, discipline, and the fierce tackling. Supporters are encouraged to turn out in force and bring the noise. Let’s get behind the ladies in black and amber as they chase glory.

U14 Girls

Both U14 LGFA squads bowed out of the championship at the semi-finals stage this week. The Division 5 team played Athlone and although the girls emptied themselves they were beaten by a stronger Athlone side. The Division 1 team were also out manoeuvred by a slick Shamrocks side that were in flying form. This group of players have had a fantastic year of football but just fell short at the semi-final stage. They were also very well looked after in terms of gear and on that note we would like to thank Clive Kiernan (Kiernan Kitchens) who very generously sponsored lovely quarter zip tops for the girls in advance of their semi-finals this week. A very kind gesture and much appreciated.
