The senior men added a strong win to their campaign this weekend. A youthful Mullingar Shamrocks side put it right up to the current county champions particularly in the first half. Shamrocks galloped into an early lead courtesy of a Ryan Kelly goal however, The Downs regrouped and fought their way back in to a one-point lead at the break. Mullingar Shamrocks 1-05 The Downs 0-09. The second half was more like The Downs of previous years. They showed their composure and never relinquished the lead from then on, helped by goals from Ian Martin and Niall Mitchell following very good team moves. Final score The Downs 2-18 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-13. This win leaves The Downs in a much better position following two draws in their opening games. They will be back in action in two week’s time against Caulry GAA. 

 

Not to be outdone by the seniors, the junior team took all the points on offer in their third round encounter away from home on Sunday morning with a comprehensive win over Moate All Whites. Well done to all involved.

The senior ladies recorded their second win in the championship against St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge last Thursday evening. The ladies had a battle on their hands but managed an eight point win when the final whistle blew. Final score The Downs 3-11 Rochfortbridge 1-09

Our Junior ladies weren’t as lucky. They came up against a very strong St. Paul’s side on Friday evening with the away side coming out on the right side of this occasion.  

The U12 boys were in action on Friday evening. The black team faced Cill Óige and the ambers faced Garrycastle. Both teams put in decent performances. The ambers had a strong win while the blacks came up short against a strong Cill Óige side.

Our u16 girls recorded their first win in Division 1 championship this week with a hard fought win over Garrycastle on Tuesday evening. They followed their first win with a second win on Friday evening against the other Athlone opposition – Athlone GAA, also away from home. A super week for our U16 girls who were promoted to Division 1 this year following a good Division 2 league campaign. 

 

Our U8 girls were thrilled to receive a boot bag sponsored by Claire Farrell of Ultrasound Care last Friday night after training. We thank Claire for her generosity. We are immensely grateful for the support from the community as always.

Sympathy

We extend our sincere sympathy to the Carroll and Flynn families on the passing of Benny Flynn, late of Heathstown, Coralstown. Benny has a number of grandchildren playing for The Downs at various age levels and his daughter Marie is an active working member of the club particularly in the cuppa hut.
