SFC Results
The senior men of The Downs played the second round in the Shay Murtagh Championship in a sunny TEG Cusack Park last Sunday evening against our near neighbours Coralstown Kinnegad. In a repeat of last year’s final there was never going to be too much between the teams. Coralstown Kinnegad dominated proceedings in the first half and lead by 5 points on a score-line of 1-07 to 0-05. The Downs were re-energised at the start of the second half by the return of Luke Loughlin who had a huge impact when he came on causing havoc in the Coralstown Kinnnegad defence. Luke himself kicked two wonderful two-pointers and in the 59th minute turned provider, lobbing a ball into the square for Niall Mitchell to flick the ball wonderfully into the Coralstown Kinnegad net putting The Downs a point ahead for the first time in the game. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hold on and Corlastown managed to kick over an equaliser with the final kick of the game. Final score 1-13 a-piece. Congratulations to Ben Harte who made his senior football debut on this occasion.
The junior team were up against Killlucan at home on Sunday morning. After taking a three goal lead on a score-line of 3-07 to 0-07 at half-time, Killucan fought back tenaciously to leave only 3 points between the sides at full-time. Final score The Downs 3-11 Killucan 0-17. We had adult debuts from Andrew Brennan, Eoin Mullin and Finn Raeside. Elliot Rourke made his debut in the previous round. Congratulations to all.
Underage Results
Our U16 boys were on the receiving end of a dominating performance from St. Lomans in their most recent championship game on Wednesday evening.
The minors were also unlucky to lose out to St. Lomans on Friday night by a solitary point. Final score 1-08 to 0-12
The U20’s were well beaten by Mullingar Shamrocks on Tuesday evening in their championship opener on a score-line of 4-14 to 0-14. Better days ahead for these lads.
Senior Ladies Fundraiser
Our senior ladies completed a spinathon outside O’Briens Garage last Sunday from 9am until 5 p.m.Many thanks to O’Briens Garage who provided water to the ladies throughout the day. Thanks to JP O' Brien and staff in O'Briens Centra who was so helpful all day for allowing us to use their space and supporting our cause. The good weather helped of course, with lots of people calling for an ice cream cone, including familiar faces from our own club aswell as neighbours who all supported us generously. Well done to all involved.
Sympathy
We extend our sincere sympathy to the Carroll and Flynn families on the passing of Benny Flynn, late of Heathstown, Coralstown. Benny has a number of grandchildren playing for The Downs at various age levels and his daughter Marie is an active working member of the club particularly in the cuppa hut.
