On Saturday afternoon we travelled to Rochfortbridge for the highly anticipated U20 football final versus Shandonagh a full 2 months since the semi-final!
On a splendid surface in Rochfortbridge, The downs lads flew out of the blocks and dominated the opening period and by the tenth minute they had struck for 3 goals through Michael Moloney, Sean Colgan and Eoin Mullin to leave the score at 3-0 to 0-0.Shandonagh started to gain some momentum and by halftime courtesy of a number of frees and a solo goal by the ever dangerous Will Scahill they brought the gap back to the minimum before Billy Moffatt scored his first point of the day to leave the halftime score at 3-2 to 1-6.
Shandonagh opened the second half scoring through another Scahill free but from there on out The Downs lads never looked back. Billy Moffatt , Carl McCormack & Podge Monaghan started to dominate the midfield battle. The downs kicked a couple of points and just like the first half The Downs struck for 3 goals through, Michael Moloney when he rose highest in the square to fist home a dropping shot from Sean Colgan. Moments later, Moloney completed his hat-trick when he struck again from close range. Podge Monaghan then pounced on a Shandonagh kickout to surge through the Shandonagh defence who then made no mistake with his finish to the back of the Shandonagh net. Over the proceeding 15 minutes the downs kept the scoreboard ticking over with some points through Billy Moffatt , Sean Colgan, Eoinie Mullin, Michael Moloney and Podge Monaghan to claim the win on a scoreline of The Downs 6-10 Shandonagh 2-9. This U20 success caps off a brilliant year for the club.
