The Division 3 team were at home to Maryland on Monday evening, unfortunately we were unable to secure the points on this occasion. Half-time score was Maryland 2-03 to The Downs 0-07 while the full time score ended at Maryland 2-12 The Downs 1-09. Hard luck lads.
Wonderful Westmeath
Westmeath continue their superb run of victories again this weekend with both men and women securing further wins at home in TEG Cusack Park this weekend. First up it was the men who made hard work of a commanding lead in the early stages, only to find themselves level at full time with extra time again needed to separate the sides. Half-time of extra time saw them 6 points down but again heroically they dug deep overturning that 6 point deficit and charge ahead for the win. We were both excited and proud to see our own hard-working Kevin O’Sullivan rifling the ball to the Cavan net for the decisive score of the game, just rewards for Kevin’s diligence and effort throughout the campaign. And not forgetting the contributions from our other panel members Charlie Drumm who also kicked a sublime point off his left foot and Ian Martin coming on in extra-time. Congratulations to Mark McHugh and his management team on another nail biting win. All eyes on the draw Tuesday morning for the next round of the All-Ireland series.
The ladies were up against Monaghan the following day in Cusack Park in the All-Ireland series. Westmeath got off to a flying start and never relinquished that lead throughout. Half-time saw them up by Westmeath 2-05 to Monaghan0-03. The second half was more of the same with the final score Westmeath3-09 to Monaghan 0-04. We were also treated to a half-time display from our own U10’s. What a great occasion for these young superstars. Congratulations to our own Lucy Power, Niamh Nolan and Ellen Taite on another superb day out for Westmeath.
LGFA Underage Round-up
Well done to our u8 & U10 girls who were in action this weekend in Clonmellon for Go Games. The girls put on a great display of football with games v CFCW, St Paul's Delvin, Coralstown Kinnegad & Ballycomoyle. Thanks to St Paul's Delvin for being great hosts as always. The excitement didn’t end there for our u10s who were invited to play at half time during the Westmeath Ladies All Ireland first round clash v Monaghan.
Hard luck to our u14 girls who played St Lomans on Tuesday in both D1 & D4 of the league. Both teams put in a valiant effort in two well matched games, however the heat and lack of fresh legs to run in had our girls run out of steam in the end with the blues running out winners in both games. Well done in particular to the u12 girls who played up to D4 on the day.
Our U16 girls were involved in the Division 2 league final on Monday evening last. Despite a valiant effort, our girls were up against a stronger St. Lomans side who were dominant on the night. Hard luck to all involved.
